WKU Biologist Receives USDA Funding
Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Kinchel Doerner, associate professor of biology at Western Kentucky University, has received funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service to investigate the formation of malodors associated with animal wastes.
Offensive odors coming from animal wastes are an increasing problem as residential building moves into traditional agricultural areas. Dr. Doerner will work with Bryan Mason, research specialist at WKU, and Dr. Kimberly Cook and Dr. John Loughrin of the USDA-ARS Bowling Green laboratory in this initiative. The approach will involve the isolation and cultivation of microorganisms responsible for odor production followed by investigations on how to diminish their activity in wastes.
