Bowling Green, Ky. - Eleven middle school participants represented Western Kentucky University’s
Educational Talent Search program by winning first place in the annual Academic Bowl competition March 4 at the University of Louisville.
The Academic Team won first place in two of the three parts of the competition including the written and spelling exams and won second place in the super quiz portion of the Academic Bowl.
In addition to these honors, team members took home four individual awards: Wesley Poteet of James E. Bazzell Middle School, first in written exam; Gabriel Mercer of Warren East Middle School, second in written exam and third in spelling; and Cody Sanders of Warren East Middle School, second in spelling.
The WKU Educational Talent Search Academic Team will represent Kentucky in the Southeast Regional academic bowl competition, sponsored by the Southeast Association of Educational Opportunities Programs, on April 29 in Atlanta.

From Warren East Middle School: Cody Sanders, David Chhouk, Gabriel Mercer.
From Franklin-Simpson Middle School: Dee Walker, Jasmine Grimes.
From Bowling Green Junior High School: Indyea Nixon, Sakoyia Hodge.
From James E. Bazzell Middle School: Storm Browning, Wesley Poteet.
“To see the smiles of the 11 Talent Search participants after this weekend’s state competition made my job even more important than ever before. I look forward to many more victories,” said Martha Sales, director of WKU’s Educational Talent Search program.
Wesley Poteet, an eighth-grade student at James E. Bazzell Middle High and member of the WKU Talent Search Academic Team, said: “I wouldn’t trade the feeling I had today for a million dollars.”
WKU’s Educational Talent Search program serves 1,000 students in 11 counties. Its mission is to engage qualified youth in grades six through 12 in developmentally appropriate activities that will encourage persistence in high school, enrollment in postsecondary education and a lifelong pursuit of learning in order to be productive citizens of a global society.
