Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting placed seventh overall in the 46th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program’s Intercollegiate Broadcast News Competition.

Three WKU students placed in the top 20 in the radio and television news contest, the second of two Hearst broadcasting competitions. Tamara Evans, a Bowling Green senior, tied for 13th in television news, while McKenzie L. York, a Louisville junior, and Dorthea Brumsey, an Elizabethtown senior, finished 19th and 20th in radio news.

The top 10 schools in the Hearst broadcasting competition were North Carolina, Brigham Young, Arizona State, Penn State, Syracuse, Nebraska, WKU, Maryland, Northwestern and Montana.

In the year’s first competition, Brenna Gallegos, a Lexington senior, qualified for the national broadcasting semifinals with a fifth-place finish in radio features.

The Hearst program, often called the Pulitzers of collegiate journalism, conducts competitions in print journalism, broadcasting and photojournalism. WKU won the overall Hearst title in 2000, 2001 and 2005. Final winners will be announced in April.
