Veterans Upward Bound Student Wins National Scholarship

Bowling
Green, Ky. - For the third year in a row a Veterans Upward Bound participant at Western Kentucky University has been selected for a national scholarship offered by the National Association of Veterans Upward Bound Project Personnel.
Carlton Potter of Franklin is attending postsecondary school after completing VUB and is maintaining a 3.94 GPA.
Potter dreamed about going to college for years. He lost a son in the Iraq War and three months later was laid off work when his plant moved to Mexico. With other grown children he found this a turning point and decided to go to school. Potter came to VUB but feared school was impossible because of a hearing impairment. He was referred for help and was guided into college where he enrolled in 2005 and has been an excellent student ever since.
Potter has been on the WKU Dean’s List twice and intends to graduate with a degree in exceptional education. He plans to work with disabled students to help them receive opportunities they might otherwise miss to attend postsecondary school.
Previous winners include Kim Mack, a current WKU student, and Will King, a recent WKU graduate.
