Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. David Keeling, head of Western Kentucky University’s Department of Geography and Geology, has had two op-ed articles published over the past week that address transportation and geopolitical issues.

“Get Back on the Rails, America,” published in the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press on June 25, argues that the United States should invest in new transportation technologies such as high-speed rail networks if our national dependency on imported oil and our vulnerability to global oil politics are to be significantly reduced. 

“Left turns don't have to be dead ends” argues that U.S. policymakers should recognize the root causes of Latin America’s leftist electoral shift in recent years, especially as Mexicans elect a new president on July 2. This article was published June 29 in News Mexico, the only daily English-language newspaper in Mexico.

Dr. Keeling is a member of the American Geographical Society’s Writers Circle. The AGS is America’s oldest geographical organization. Its mission is to link business, professional and scholarly worlds in the creation and application of geographical knowledge and techniques to address economic, social and environmental programs. By distributing op-ed essays, Dr. Keeling and the AGS hope to encourage public discussion of geographical issues critical to society.
