WKU SHRM Chapter Recognized With Superior Merit Award

June 29, 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. - The national Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has recognized the Western Kentucky University Student SHRM Chapter for earning a superior merit award for the 2005-06 academic year.

The student chapter is sponsored by the Southern Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (SKY-SHRM), which is the professional human resource group located in Bowling Green.

Records indicate this is the first time the WKU Chapter has applied for the national award. There are two top awards for which student chapters can apply – the merit award and the superior merit award. Based on merit points, the top 10 chapters in the United States are recognized at an annual student conference in Washington, D.C.

Points are earned by various activities, including increasing student membership, taking part in professional conferences, having human resource professionals speak at membership meetings, touring local industrial facilities and recognizing the impact of HR on each facility toured, publishing monthly newsletters, having a web page, taking part in internships, mentoring opportunities and job shadowing, actively taking part in community service activities, attending meetings of the sponsoring chapter and taking part in university competition on human resource games. The local chapter participated in all of these activities except for the HR games competition. (Out of 430 student SHRM chapters in the United States, 123 applied for an award.)

Credit for this year’s hard work and receipt of the award for the WKU chapter of SHRM goes to President Mindy Wilson and First Vice President Brentni Henderson of Bowling Green and faculty adviser Dr. Jerry Bennett. The group expects to raise the bar even higher next year and shoot for one of the top 10 chapters in the nation.
