Green, Ky.
- The Center for Mathematics, Science and Environmental Education at Western Kentucky University and the Center for Environmental Education at Murray State University will be hosting an Environmental Education mini-camp for the children of St. Jude’s Hospital Sickle Cell Anemia’s Camp Courage.
During the one-day camp June 22, 40 teachers from western Kentucky who have been attending Murray State and WKU’s Summer Institute, sponsored by the Kentucky Council for Postsecondary Education, will be working with children from Camp Courage in the various environments of Land Between the Lakes.
These 40 teachers will be finishing the weeklong workshop hosted by the two universities at Brandon Spring Group Camp. During Summer Institute, teachers will study the principles, theories and practices of environmental education and during the mini camp will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned with the children of Camp Courage in a variety of activities; including a natural stream study.
WKU’s Dr. Terry Wilson and Murray State University’s Dr. Joe Baust hope to provide an opportunity for western Kentucky teachers to help children connect with nature and to share a “sense of place” with them. This “sense of place” is important to all children as they seek to find their own place in the world. It is the intention of both the Summer Institute and the director and staff of Camp Courage to allow the diverse children of Camp Courage to benefit from this natural learning experience.
