WKU Welcomes Jordanian Radio Team For Training Session

July 06, 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. -The International Journalism and Media Management Training (IJMMT) program at Western Kentucky University will host a team of six radio professionals from Jordan for a three-week training session in July. The IJMMT is a partnership between Internews Network and WKU.

The radio production unit is a cooperative effort between the IJMMT and the Princess Basma Youth Resource Center in Amman, Jordan. The unit will produce “Autostrad,” a new issues-oriented radio program. The IJMMT provides the equipment and training necessary to produce the program. In preparation for the session, the Autostrad team created a blog to share experiences at http://www.autostradradio.blogspot.com/.

The unit’s six staff members arrive July 12 for the intensive radio training conducted by the staff of Western’s Public Radio and the faculty of WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting. On July 30, the team travels to Washington, D.C., before returning to Jordan on Aug. 2.

The July training follows a session in May 2006 during which Jerry Barnaby, program manager of the IJMMT, and Dr. Pam Johnson, director of WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting, traveled to Jordan to participate in a workshop and training session with the Autostrad staff.  In August, the unit will begin producing the new program and market it to the growing number of independent radio stations in Jordan.

The IJMMT is a program managed by WKU’s Department of Educational Telecommunications. This current program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) recognized the collaborative possibilities of WKU and Internews and was instrumental in bringing the partners together and in the continuing support for this program.

Information about each partner is available online at www.internews.org and www.wkyu.org/ijmmt. For information about the program, contact Jerry Barnaby at 1-800-599-2424 or email ijmmt@wku.edu
