Bowling
Green, Ky. - Students in Western Kentucky University’s Department of Chemistry have been recognized by the American Chemical Society.
Bianca Casenas of Elizabethtown, a chemistry major conducting undergraduate research with Dr. Wei-Ping Pan at the Institute for Combustion Science and Environmental Technology, has received a national travel grant award for the ACS fall 2006 national meeting Sept. 10-14 in San Francisco.
For the fourth time in five years, the Chemistry Department’s Student Affiliate Chapter of the ACS was honored by the national organization. The chapter received a 2005 Honorable Mention from the ACS Committee on Education. This award was based on the significance and level of programs, activities and volunteerism throughout 2004-05 and is a hallmark of the quality of the degree of student civic engagement.
The ACS has about 600 student chapters in the United States with about 25 percent qualifying for an award. The WKU chapter meets biweekly for field trips to regional industries and universities, professional meetings, community service and social activities.
In addition, the WKU chapter presented a demonstration at the 2005 Southeast Region ACS meeting, an invited poster at the prestigious SCI-MIX session of the Spring 2006 National ACS Meeting and a demonstration booth at the Student Affiliate session. The chapter also received a $250 ACS Travel Award for the national meeting.
