Consumer And Family Sciences Students Win National Award

July 18, 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. - For the second straight year, students in Western Kentucky University’s Department of Consumer and Family Sciences have won national honors for their civic engagement project.

The WKU Beta Delta Chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron, a national honor society, was the first place national winner for the 2006 Professional Program Project. Other top finishers were Idaho State, Texas State and Ohio State.

The national professional project theme was “Many Paths … One Destination.” The WKU chapter, led by president Melissa Essenpreis of Rockfield and first vice president Rachel Riley of Center, was honored for its efforts in assisting the Dream Factory, which focuses on granting terminally ill children’s wishes, and the Second Wind Dreams Association, which focuses on granting senior citizens wishes. The chapter’s report on its yearlong project was titled “A Journey of Dreams (Diversity, Respect, Empowerment, Awareness, Motivation, Service).”

“We are honored to win back to back years,” said Cindy Jones, chapter adviser. “Great students can achieve many things and we are fortunate to have excellent students to work with.”
Dr. Karen Mason and Dr. Martha Jenkins also serve as advisers.
