Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Math Department is making an addition to its formula for student success.

Math faculty member Bruce Kessler will host “Math Matters: Why Do I Need to Know This?” on WKU’s campus cable system. The weekly half-hour program will show how the mathematics being taught in students’ General Math, College Algebra and Math for Elementary Teachers courses is applied in the real world. Each show will feature three segments focusing on common applications of the types of mathematics that WKU students may be facing in their classes.

The show will air on campus channel 12 throughout the spring semester at 5 p.m. Wednesdays with replays at 11 p.m. Wednesdays and 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. Portions of the program will be downloadable from the show’s webpage, www.wku.edu/mathmatters.

This program is being produced through the facilities of WKYU-PBS, and is supported by a Provost’s Initiative for Excellence grant, the Ogden College of Science and Engineering, the Department of Mathematics, and Housing and Residence Life.

For questions regarding the show, contact Kessler at mathmatters@wku.edu or at 745-4449.
