SGA Provides Funding For Equipment To
Be Used By WKU Police Explorer Program

February 03, 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Student Government Association at Western Kentucky University made a donation of $10,259.66 in December to Western’s Police Explorer Program. The funding helped them purchase five new Trek Police mountain bikes priced at almost $950 each, as well additional equipment for the bikes, new radios and uniforms.

WKU Police Capt. Mike Wallace said, “The old bikes were worn out, and this donation was instrumental in keeping the bike patrol going.”

The Police Explorer Program primarily functions as an escort service offered to all WKU students, faculty members and staff after dark. They are also used to provide security at special events on campus, and to assist with crime prevention programming.

The new equipment will allow the patrol to maintain the level of service that has been offered since the implementation of the program in 2002.

The crime prevention programs at WKU have been recognized in publications such as Kentucky Living Magazine and the Police Chief Magazine, and Vanderbilt University and the University of Kentucky are just a few schools that are considering modeling their crime prevention programs after the one at Western.
