'Star Wars' Theme For 2006 WKU Physics Olympics Feb. 25

February 09, 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. - “Star Wars” is the theme for the 2006 Western Kentucky Physics Olympics.

The event, hosted by WKU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at Thompson Complex Central Wing. High schools in the region have been invited to participate.

The five Physics Olympics activities include two that involve competitors arriving at the event ready to compete with devices they have designed, constructed and tested. The Do-Ahead Project is titled “Hans Solo in Carbonite,” in which participants must create sugar glass to encase a Han Solo figurine. The Plan-Ahead Project is called “Corellian Rocket Trials,” in which teams will construct and launch a rocket.

Other events are the Calculation/Communication Challenge, where students will use teamwork, communication and calculation skills to achieve the specified goal; an On-the-Spot Activity, which is a hands-on, impromptu challenge; and the Order-of-Magnitude Quiz, a brain teaser which asks contestants to quickly estimate answers for extreme situations.

Winners of the overall competition will receive a $500 scholarship to attend WKU. Additional information is available online at http://physics.wku.edu/olympics/overview.html
