Mackie Second Speaker In WKU Centennial Series
Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Calvin Mackie, a professor, inventor and motivational speaker, will be the second lecturer in Western Kentucky University’s “Centennial Speaker Series: Conversations on the Future of Higher Education.”
In his visit to WKU, Dr. Mackie will examine the nature, purpose and direction of education in this country and will discuss strategies to confront the multiple challenges facing higher education today. His lecture will begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at Van Meter Auditorium. Admission is free and a book signing will follow. “When I heard Calvin Mackie speak I left in awe of his accomplishments and was so motivated to come back to my job as an academic adviser and work to make a difference in the lives of the students with whom I come in contact,” said WKU staff regent Pat Jordan, who heard him speak last fall at the Council on Postsecondary Education’s Institute for Effective Governance Governor’s Conference on Postsecondary Education Trusteeship. “He reminded me to give everyone a chance to prove themselves by setting the bar high for students and then guiding them with compassion.” Dr. Mackie is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Tulane University in New Orleans, specializing in heat transfer and fluid dynamics. He’s the co-founder of Channel ZerO, an educational and motivational consulting company and has been active on the public speaking circuit giving motivational presentations to numerous educational, civic and corporate institutions. As an inventor, Dr. Mackie received a patent in November 1999 on a device to retrofit luggage stow bins on 737 and 757 Boeing commercial airliners. He also authors a motivational column entitled, “Think About It!” for the Black Collegian Magazine. In 1990, Dr. Mackie earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech and a bachelor’s in mathematics from Morehouse College, where he graduated magna cum laude. He received his master’s and doctorate in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech. His numerous awards and honors include the 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, 2003 National Title One Distinguished Graduate for Louisiana, 2002 Black Engineer of the Year Award for College Level Educator, 2002 New Orleans Data News Weekly Trailblazer Award, and the Pi Tau Sigma/ASME Excellence in Teaching Award in Mechanical Engineering for 2000 and 2002.
