WKU Graduate Is Awarded 2005 Governor's Awards In The Arts

February 10, 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. - Hazel Carver, an alumna of Western Kentucky University, was one of 10 recipients of the 2005 Governor’s Awards in the Arts for Education. Carver, a retired Russellville music teacher and band director, as well as an accomplished Editor of the Bluegrass Music News – official journal of the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) – also received the Western’s Department of Music Wall of Fame Award in 2003.

As a Western student, Carver studied violin with Hugh Johnson and piano with Franz Strahm, who had once studied piano with Listz in Europe. She graduated from Western in three years with her BA in music in 1938, and went on to graduate with her master’s degree in Education in Music in 1962.

Carver served 35 years as band and choral director for Russellville High School until her retirement in 1977, when she then became editor of the Bluegrass Music News. Under her guidance, the newsletter-style magazine evolved to become a nationally recognized journal, and the official journal of the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA).

Gov. Ernie Fletcher said of the recipients, “The individuals and organizations selected for these awards have made Kentucky a better place to live through their tireless contributions to the arts.”

Gov. Fletcher and First Lady Glenna Fletcher honored Carver, along with other award recipients, at a public ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 9, in the State Capital Rotunda in Frankfort.

Dr. Mitzi Groom, Music Department head, said: “We at WKU are very proud to have an alumna of Ms. Carver’s stature in the music education arena. For over 50 years, she has helped to shape the direction of music education in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Her influence will continue to be felt throughout the region and in the daily activities of the Kentucky Music Educators Association.”
