Bowling Green, Ky. - Mark Goodman, executive director of the Student Press Law Center, will be the keynote speaker for Western Kentucky University’s 2006 Mark of Excellence Newspaper and Broadcasting Contest awards ceremony March 8.

About 270 students from 17 schools are expected to attend the awards presentation at 10 a.m. at the Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium. The James Highland High School Media Adviser of the Year also will be recognized.

Goodman, a lawyer, has been executive director of the Student Press Law Center in Arlington, Va., since 1985. Each year he speaks to over 25 groups of students, teachers, school administrators and attorneys around the United States and abroad about the legal issues confronting the student press. He has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and a law degree from Duke University.

During his tenure at the Student Press Law Center, Goodman has received many awards for his work with the student press including a First Amendment Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Louis E. Ingelhart First Amendment Award from College Media Advisers and the Carl Towley Award -- the Journalism Education Association’s highest honor.

Recognizing the essential roles freedoms of speech and press play in a democratic society, the SPLC is committed to helping a diverse population of young journalists understand, value and practice the principles embodied in the First Amendment. The Center was created in 1974 by professional journalists and educators as the only national organization devoted exclusively to protecting the free press rights of high school and college journalists by providing free legal advice and information to students and their advisers.

The event is sponsored by the WKU Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Kentucky High School Media Institute and WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting. More information is available online at www.wku.edu/khsmp.
