Nearly 600 Attend WKU's 'Engaging The Spirit' Conference

- Nearly 600 faculty and professional staff at Western Kentucky University attended “Engaging the Spirit: Best Practices for Student Success.”
This second annual conference was hosted by WKU’s Division of Academic Affairs on Friday (Aug. 18).
Featured speakers at the conference included Dee Fink, Instructional Consultant in Higher Education, and WKU President Gary Ransdell.
“Engaging the Spirit” included more than 40 presentations by faculty and staff on the theme of best practices for student success.
Six WKU faculty members were honored at the conference. University awards were given in the areas of Teaching, Research/Creativity, Public Service and Student Advisement. The 2006 University Distinguished Professors also were announced.
Winning the award for Faculty Excellence in Teaching was Dr. Mark Cambron, Department of Engineering in the Ogden College of Science and Engineering.
The Research/Creativity Award was given to Dr. Rezaul Mahmood of the Department of Geography and Geology in Ogden College.
Chad Stevens, School of Journalism and Broadcasting in the Potter College of Arts & Letters, received the Public Service Award.
The Student Advisement Award was received by Dr. Vernon Sheeley, Department of Counseling and Student Affairs in the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
This year’s recipients of the University Distinguished Professor were Dr. Nicholas Crawford, professor of Geography and Geology in the Ogden College of Science and Engineering, and Dr. Sharon Mutter, professor of Psychology in the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
