April 05, 2006
Bowling Green, Ky. -
Western Kentucky University’s Department of Music will celebrate its fifth annual Gift of Music Recital on Saturday night.
The recital by recipients of WKU’s endowed music scholarships begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. Admission is free.
“We are very excited to be able to present three new scholarship awardees in this year’s Gift of Music Scholarship Recital,” said Mitzi Groom, department head. “These three new funds have some very close ties to the department, both through faculty and student associations.”
Chris Osborne of Springfield, Tenn., is the recipient of the Bennie Beach Jr. Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, which is named for the longtime Student Activities program coordinator and Campus Activities Board adviser, also has a tie to his father and WKU emeritus faculty member Bennie Beach Sr. who served on the music faculty from 1953-1981.
Jessica Cunningham of Bowling Green is the recipient of the Sylvia Kersenbaum Scholarship, which has been partially funded through Kersenbaum’s numerous recitals. Kersenbaum, a music faculty member since 1976, is retiring this year.
Mary Alice Ratzlaff of Orland, Calif., is the recipient of the Jackson Miller Scholarship, named for the late Jackson Miller, a student trumpeter in WKU Bands (Marching Band, Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Basketball Band) from 2002-2003.
