Bowling Green, Ky. - WKYU-FM, The Public Radio Service of Western Kentucky University, has earned a total of 14 awards in 2006 AP broadcast competition. The news staff at the station earned 10 first-place awards this year, winning more categories than any other radio station in the Commonwealth.
Winning entries from WKYU-FM covered a wide range of subjects and categories, including the Best Newscast competition. The winning entry, the “Mid-Day Edition,” is a 30-minute newscast which airs each weekday at 11:30 a.m. Central time.
Lisa Autry won the Best Reporter category and won first place in the Best Public Service Award category for her coverage of the Avian Flu.
Assistant News Director Kevin Willis earned first place for Public Service Reporting in the large market category for his report on the effect of workout supplements. Willis also earned first-place honors for his coverage of hurricane evacuees in Elizabethtown, his documentary on the trial of Saddam Hussein, and his Use of Sound entry about families in the region who stay in touch with loved ones serving in Iraq.
News Director Dan Modlin won first place in the large market category for a series on the shortage of resources for public defenders in Kentucky. Morning Edition host Joe Corcoran earned a second in that category for his series on Hurricane Katrina.
Modlin also earned a first-place award in the Enterprise/Investigative category for his interview with a recovering methamphetamine addict and a first in the Best Series category for a report on the impact meth is having on the children of abusers.
Modlin said the entire staff at the station can take pride in the Associated Press awards. “It takes extra effort to produce the programs that are judged at this level,” he said. “A station doesn’t win this many categories without some very hard-working, dedicated people.”
