Bowling Green, Ky. - A pictorial history of Western Kentucky University will make its debut this week at two events.
Commissioned in honor of WKU’s Centennial, “Western Kentucky University, The First 100 Years, 1906-2006” tells the WKU story through about 150 photographs from the University’s Archives. It was compiled by Nancy Baird, Kentucky history specialist for WKU Libraries; Carol Crowe Carraco, distinguished university professor of history; and Sue Lynn Stone McDaniel, university archivist.
Baird will premiere the book at the Kentucky Live! program 7 p.m. Thursday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Bowling Green. The book will also be available on Friday and Saturday at the Southern Kentucky Book Fest at the Sloan Convention Center in Bowling Green.
The books, which sell for $29.95, will later be available at the Kentucky Museum Store and at the University Bookstore, and can be ordered by mail by contacting Baird. Profits will support the WKU History Department, the Kentucky Library and the Kentucky Museum.
It was edited by WKU alumnus and former Courier-Journal photographer Bill Strode and published in conjunction with Harmony House Publishers.
“We culled from more than 12,000 photos to find 150 that tell the University’s story,” Baird said. “We feel like we’ve achieved a good balance.”
