WKU Student Qualifies For Hearst
Broadcasting Finals
April 26, 2006
Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University senior Brenna Gallegos of Lexington will compete for the national broadcasting championship in the 46th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
Gallegos is one of five radio news finalists who will compete June 7-10 in San Francisco. Other national finalists will include five in television news, six in photojournalism and eight in writing, including WKU sophomore Corey Paul of Bowling Green.
Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the Hearst program holds yearlong competitions in writing, photojournalism and broadcast news. WKU, which won the overall title in 2005, 2001 and 2000, finished third nationally this year.
WKU seniors Will DeShazer of Bowling Green and Allen Bryant of Owensboro are among 12 semifinalists in the Hearst photojournalism competition.
The Hearst program, funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, operates under the auspices of the accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. More than 100 schools participate in the program, which awards more than $400,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
