WKU Symphonic Band To Present Concert On Oct. 02

September 16, 2005

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University Symphonic Band will present its first concert of this season at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, at Van Meter Auditorium.

The season’s theme is "We Serve Up Only the Best ..." The first concert’s title is "Lauds and Tropes: Gratitude for Memories of Russia." Admission is $5. Tickets will be sold at the door.

The 70-minute program contains a wide variety of selections, including a rollicking circus march by Henry Fillmore named “Rolling Thunder”; a moving hymn titled “God of Our Fathers,” arranged by Thomas Knox, which will be dedicated to the victims of Katrina; a band masterwork “Overture in C” by Charles Catel, which was written in 1792; and a work by Dr. Francis McBeth titled “Lauds and Tropes,” which will honor those who so aided the band’s trip to perform in Moscow and St. Petersburg earlier this year.

The Oct. 2 program will have two additional special components. The featured soloist will be senior music education major Jessica Carmichael Cunningham, who will be performing on flute the beautiful “Concertino” by noted French composer Cecile Chaminade. Cunningham has studied flute with Dr. Charles Smith and Dr. Heidi Pintner and has successfully participated in numerous flute master classes and competitions.

As a concert finale, the band will refer one last time to its positive memories of Russia with a presentation of Peter Tchaikovsky’s exhilarating “March Slav.” With the climactic presentation of the Czarist National Anthem in the last bars of the work, “March Slav” is one of Tchaikovsky’s most memorable and exciting compositions.

The Symphonic Band will be conducted by WKU’s nationally recognized Director of Bands Dr. John C. Carmichael and by associate director of bands Eric M. Smedley.
