NASA Award Boosts Kentucky Space Grant Consortium

September 06, 2005

Bowling Green, Ky. - The state of Kentucky has received a big boost from NASA.

On Sept. 1, NASA announced that the Kentucky Space Grant Consortium, a group of colleges and universities dedicated to improving science, engineering and mathematics education in Kentucky, has achieved NASA’s highest status of Designated Consortium.

NASA's decision is the result of a competition among Space Grant consortia throughout the United States. Kentucky was one of only seven states to win an award. The award includes an immediate funding increase of $353,000 and increased future annual budgets.

The award allows "Kentucky Space Grant to expand their work of preparing talented individuals for NASA-related careers," said Diane DeTroye, NASA's Space Grant program manager.

Colleges and universities in Kentucky's consortium will henceforth be designated by NASA as “Space Grant Colleges.” The consortium includes Bellarmine University, Centre College, the Kentucky Center for Space Enterprise, Eastern Kentucky University, Kentucky State University, Morehead State University, Murray State University, Northern Kentucky University, Thomas More College, Transylvania University, Triboflow Separations, LLC, University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, and Western Kentucky University.

Students and faculty at all consortium colleges will be able to compete for research-based fellowships and scholarships in aerospace-related fields. Funds will also be used to support faculty-mentored student research and teacher workshops. The public will benefit, too, from newly-funded planetarium presentations, public telescope viewing and other space-related events.

Western Kentucky University administers the statewide consortium program from the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Ogden College of Science and Engineering. Western's faculty and students are eligible for the consortium competitions and have averaged five awards per year since the consortium was founded in 1991.
