Bowling Green, Ky. - On Wednesday (Sept. 21), Western Kentucky University, in collaboration with Hope Harbor, Inc., will host Get Carded 2005, a program to educate college students about sexual assault.
Volunteers, organized through WKU Counseling and Testing Center and Hope Harbor, will distribute wallet cards and information about the National Sexual Assault Hotline from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Downing University Center and Garrett Conference Center and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Preston Health and Activities Center.
Volunteers around the country will distribute these cards to 1 million college students on more than 1,200 college campuses in 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The Get Carded program helps get critical information into the hands of people who need it most. This is the second year WKU has participated in the Get Carded program.
Elizabeth Mohon, sexual assault services coordinator, noted the following information:
* People age 16-24 are three-times more at risk of being sexually assaulted than any other group.
* Young women and men are eager to know how they can protect themselves and help prevent rape.
* Free, confidential counseling is available through the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE as well as services through Western Kentucky University’s Counseling and Testing Center at (270) 745-3159.
