Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University will celebrate the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 12-16.
The federal government is requiring all higher education institutions that receive funds from the U.S. Department of Education to implement an educational program about the Constitution on Sept. 17 each year, the day the Constitution was signed in 1787.
WKU expanded “Constitution Day” to “Constitution Week” with a series of events and educational programs on campus.
“WKU is excited to sponsor our first Constitution Week,” said Dr. Saundra Curry Ardrey, head of the Political Science department. “It’s the perfect opportunity to further the goals of the American Democracy Project that strives to increase student involvement in public life.”
Events and presentations will include: “The Ten Commandments vs. The Constitution”; “Eminent Domain”; “Minority Rights and the Constitution”; “September 11 and the Constitution”; “Banned Books Week”; “Political Memorabilia and the Whitey Sanders Collection”; and a Constitution Jeopardy competition among student organizations. High school students from Bowling Green and Warren County will take part in a satellite discussion with Supreme Court justices.
The Department of Political Science is organizing the events with assistance from numerous campus groups including Academic Affairs, Student Government Association, the Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching, Student Affairs and academic departments.
