Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting will host four broadcasting veterans for a student workshop on Oct. 31 at Mass Media and Technology.

The workshop will feature Larry Pond, Rick Gevers, Lee Giles and Steve Cagle and will begin at 12:40 p.m. The group will meet with students about news, weather and sports careers in broadcasting and critique tapes. The workshop will end at 6:45 p.m.

Here’s information about the speakers:

Larry Pond: Pond’s career has taken him from Midwest newspaper reporter to television anchorman to news director (Indianapolis, Louisville, Evansville) to broadcast consultant and to talent management. After 12 years as a news director and another dozen with Frank Magid Associates, Pond opened his Pond Group talent management firm in February 1997. He is a past president of the Louisville Chapter of The Society of Professional Journalists, served as president of The Indiana AP Broadcasters and was elected to the board of RTNDA (Radio Television News Directors Association).

Rick Gevers: He has spent more than 20 years in television news including more than 11 as an award-winning news director. News directors know Gevers can find and develop good on-air talent. His clients have been hired in Seattle, Cleveland, St. Louis, Baltimore, Sacramento, Hartford, San Diego and other markets. News directors elected him to represent them as an at-large member of the RTNDA Board of Directors.

Lee Giles: He most recently served as Visiting Professor in the School of Journalism at Indiana University, teaching classes in broadcast news. Giles accepted the Indiana University appointment after retiring as WISH-TV News Director and Vice President in 2003, completing a 40-year career at the Indianapolis CBS affiliate which included 35 years as news director. Inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1993, Giles was honored in 2000 with the First Amendment Service Award, the highest recognition of the Radio Television News Directors Foundation.

Steve Cagle: He is a partner with SmithGeiger in Indianapolis. For six years he served as vice president of NBC Television Stations Division of Programming, News and Creative Services. In addition, he served a critical role in the creation, distribution and production of such popular shows as “Access Hollywood” and “Extra.” Prior to NBC, Cagle spent 17 years as vice president of Frank N. Magid Associates. He was instrumental in the survival and ultimate runaway success of “Entertainment Tonight” and many other syndicated programs from major Hollywood studios.
