Bowling Green, Ky. - Students and faculty in Western Kentucky University’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting were honored this week at the Society of Professional Journalists’ National Convention in Las Vegas.

Ashlee Clark, a junior news-editorial journalism major from Louisville, was elected to the SPJ national board of directors. Clark, who is president of the WKU student chapter of SPJ, is one of two student representatives on the national board. She will represent students on issues that have an impact on the collegiate press and will coordinate student activities across the United States for SPJ, the nation’s largest journalism organization.

Associate professor Gordon “Mac” McKerral, coordinator of the news-editorial sequence, won the Wells Key Award, the society’s highest award presented for outstanding service to SPJ. McKerral also was honored for his 18 years of service on the SPJ national board of directors.

Professor James Highland, who has served four years as SPJ’s vice president of Campus Chapter Affairs, received the national President’s Award for his work on freedom of information and censorship issues involving the campus press. Highland also received an award for his four years of service on the national board of directors.

Other awards presented at the Oct. 16-18 convention included the following:

Ed Linsmier, a senior photojournalism major from Saxe, Va., won first place in general news photography.

The College Heights Herald was third overall in Best All-Around Non-Daily Student newspaper (published two-three times per week).

The WKU student chapter of SPJ was named Outstanding Chapter in Region 5 (Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois) for its work on numerous events, including WKU’s First Amendment First celebration. Twelve chapters were recognized nationally.
