Bowling Green, Ky. - Retired U.S. Army Col. Elliott “Bud” Sydnor will be the guest speaker at Western Kentucky University’s third annual Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 11.

Col. Sydnor, a 1952 WKU graduate who spent more than 30 years in the U.S. Army, was the ground forces commander during the November 1970 raid on Son Tay to free American POWs during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star and is a member of the Army Ranger Hall of Fame.

As part of the Veterans Day event, the WKU Army ROTC Ranger Club will change its name to Sydnor’s Rangers in honor of Col. Sydnor.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the Guthrie Bell Tower. The event is sponsored by WKU’s Department of Military Science and Leadership.

A reception will follow in the Diddle Arena Hall of Champions.
