Sam Dunaway Creates Scholarship Fund At WKU

October 11, 2005

Bowling Green, Ky. - Students from several Kentucky counties will now have the opportunity to receive scholarship awards at Western Kentucky University, thanks to the generosity of one Fordsville man.

According to Tom Hiles, WKU’s vice president for Institutional Advancement, Sam Dunaway, who owns Dunaway Timber Company Inc., recently made a $400,000 commitment to create the “Sam Dunaway Endowed Scholarship Fund” at WKU. This fund will annually provide scholarship awards to children of employees of Dunaway Timber Co. and / or to students from Ohio, Breckinridge, Butler or Edmonson counties. Student recipients will be selected based on academic record and demonstrated financial need.

"We are so grateful to Mr. Dunaway for his generous gift that will forever benefit future WKU students from Ohio and surrounding counties,” Hiles said. “Mr. Dunaway has successfully built his business over many years and now is investing in building a better future for our young people.”

WKU President Gary Ransdell said the university is grateful for the new partnership with Dunaway. “These counties are important to WKU, and Mr. Dunaway’s successful lumber business helped make the communities a better place for everyone,” he said. “His decision to establish this scholarship fund will benefit the region for years to come.”

Dunaway, the leading producer of hardwood timber in the state of Kentucky, has been involved in the lumber industry for more than 50 years. Several timber companies currently operate within the umbrella of Dunaway Timber Co.
