Bowling Green, Ky. - The Hill will be alive with the sound of music and more Saturday (Oct. 22) as Western Kentucky University hosts several major events.
The Medical Center 10K Classic: Several thousand runners and walkers are expected for the annual event that begins on University Boulevard and ends at Smith Stadium. Saturday’s events, which include a 5K run/walk, 1.5 mile fun walk and the 10K run, begin at 7:30 a.m. and conclude about noon with awards presentations. The Center Care Children’s Classic for first through sixth graders begins at 9:45 a.m. at Smith Stadium. Street closings: Several streets on campus and near campus will be closed to traffic at various times including University Boulevard, College Heights Boulevard, Avenue of Champions, Kiss Me Quick Alley, Regents Drive, Normal Street, Mimosa Alley and Creason Street. KMEA State Marching Band Championships: The state finals in the Kentucky Music Educators Association competition begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at WKU’s Smith Stadium. Street closings: Avenue of Champions will be closed at 3 p.m. State semifinals begin at 10 a.m. at Warren East High School (Class A), Logan County High School (Class AA), Franklin-Simpson High School (Class AAA), Allen County-Scottsville High School (Class AAAA) and Barren County High School (Class AAAAA). Celebration of Hispanic Heritage: The Department of Modern Languages will host “Celebración de la Raza: Celebration of Hispanic Heritage” from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Amphitheater. Children of all ages are invited. The celebration will include live music, dancing, games and crafts. All activities are free. WKU Debate Fiesta: WKU’s award-winning speech and debate program will host a three-day debate tournament Friday-Sunday. Saturday’s events begin at 8 a.m. Garrett Conference Center will serve as the tournament headquarters. More information is available online at www.wku.edu/forensics.
Historic Architecture Walking Tour: A walking tour of WKU’s historic buildings will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kentucky Building. The fee is $5 per person. In addition to pointing out architectural styles, ornaments and settings of significant buildings, tour leader Jonathan Jeffrey, a professor in Library Special Collections, will discuss the relationship between WKU’s first president Dr. Henry Hardin Cherry and Louisville architect Brinton B. Davis, who designed most of the campus buildings from 1907 to 1937. Parking information: Because the Kentucky Street access to museum parking will be blocked for the 10-K, visitors to the Kentucky Building should enter/exit the parking lot across the street via Clay Street.
