Western's Public Radio Welcomes Fred Newman
Bowling Green, Ky. - In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Western Kentucky University’s Public Radio will host Fred Newman, author and touring sound effects guy for “A Prairie Home Companion.” Newman will be the celebrity guest speaker at the Anniversary BBQ Kick-off Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Sloan Convention Center in Bowling Green.
Once a freckled-faced, snaggled-toothed kid making sounds behind teachers’ backs, Newman was first heard on “A Prairie Home Companion” as a guest in 1980 as author of his first version of “MouthSounds.” He went on to work as an actor, a writer and a fairly inept puppeteer with Jim Henson, hosting many shows for Nickelodeon and Disney (including “The All New Mickey Mouse Club”). He created voices, music, and sound effects for the long-running Nickelodeon and Disney cartoon series “Doug,” and went on to win ACEs, Emmys, Peabodys, and Clios. He can be seen daily on public television’s reading show “Between the Lions.” His brand new book and CD/CD-ROM of “MouthSounds” has just been published and will be available for purchase and signing. The evening’s activities will include a BBQ buffet meal, drinks and dessert followed by introductions of past and current staff of Western’s Public Radio. Tickets are required; advance tickets are $25 and are available by calling Western’s Public Radio at 800-599-9598. Tickets will be $30 at the door. Newman’s appearance in Bowling Green is held in conjunction with the 25th Anniversary Kick-off for Western’s Public Radio. WKYU-FM began operations on the WKU campus in November 1980. In addition to the Bowling Green station, Western’s Public Radio also serves the region with WDCL-FM in Somerset, WKUE-FM in Elizabethtown and WKPB-FM in Henderson/Owensboro.
