WKU Forensic Team Wins At Berea College

Bowling Green, Ky. - Members of the Western Kentucky University forensic team took first place in team sweepstakes in the Berea portion of the Berea College/University of the Cumberlands Swing Tournament.

The squad of nine competitors also placed second in the Cumberland portion of the swing, second in debate sweepstakes and third for overall combined debate and individual events in the Nov. 11-12 tournament.

A squad of six debaters placed second in debate sweepstakes and fourth in overall sweepstakes at the University of the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif. A second group of three debaters placed second in debate sweepstakes at the Washburn University Invitational in Topeka, Kan.

Results from the University of the Cumberlands/Berea College Swing:

Barry Fields, a Bowling Green junior, tournament champion in communication analysis, second in extemporaneous speaking, a semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Ashley Burgdorf), sixth in impromptu speaking in the Berea portion.

Benjamin Pyle, a sophomore from Harrisburg, Ill., tournament champion in communication analysis, second in persuasive speaking in the Cumberlands portion; second in communication analysis in the Berea portion.

Nicole Hawk, an Upton senior, tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking, second in impromptu speaking, quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner John Morris) in the Berea portion.

Maria Wallace, a Bardstown freshman, tournament champion in informative speaking in the Cumberlands portion.

Ryan Brown, a Morehead freshman, third in persuasive speaking, fourth in informative speaking in the Cumberlands portion; fourth in persuasive speaking in the Berea portion.

Rachel Wigginton, a Glendale freshman, fourth in communication analysis in the Cumberlands portion; third in communication analysis in the Berea portion.

Ashley Burgdorf, a sophomore from Evansville, Ind., semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Barry Fields), semifinalist in impromptu speaking in the Berea portion.

Micah Mason, a freshman from Desoto, Texas, second in prose interpretation in the Berea portion.

John Morris, a LaGrange freshman, quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Nicole Hawk) in the Berea portion.

Results from the University of the Pacific Invitational:

Lauren Nelson, a freshman from Wheaton, Ill., tournament champion in impromptu speaking, tournament champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate, seventh speaker in parliamentary debate, double-octofinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Rachel Mosley).

Chad Meadows, an Owensboro sophomore, third in impromptu speaking, fourth in extemporaneous speaking, double-octofinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Adam Heugel), 20th speaker in parliamentary debate.

Adam Heugel, a sophomore from Rosenberg, Texas, tied for second in Lincoln-Douglas debate, third in informative speaking, double-octofinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Chad Meadows).

Joelle Perry, a Florence junior, semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Megan Schrader), fifth speaker in parliamentary debate.

Rachel Mosley, a freshman from Verdi, Nev., tied for second in Lincoln-Douglas debate, double-octofinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Lauren Nelson).

Megan Schrader, a freshman from Lowell, Ark., semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Joelle Perry).

Results from the Washburn University Invitational:

Keyon Shokraie, a junior from Somis, Calif., top speaker in parliamentary debate, semifinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate, octofinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Brian Bloss).

Justin Cress, a Florence senior, fourth speaker in parliamentary debate, quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate, octofinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Phil Furman from William Jewell College).

Brian Bloss, a freshman from Coppell, Texas, octofinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate, octofinalist in parliamentary debate (with partner Keyon Shokraie).
