Bowling Green, Ky. - Author and professor Daniel Goleman will share insights from his best-selling book "Working with Emotional Intelligence" during a visit to Western Kentucky University Nov. 28.
Dr. Goleman will speak at WKU as part of the Mary E. Hensley Lecture Series at 7 p.m. at Van Meter Auditorium. His lecture is free and open to the public.
Dr. Goleman, an award-winning author and Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist, has written several books and articles dealing with what makes an effective leader, including “Emotional Intelligence.”
A Harvard study found that college entrance exams, the equivalent to I.Q., had no correlation with success in such careers as teaching, law and medicine. Dr. Goleman’s studies show one’s emotional intelligence is a better indicator of leadership success. Understanding and using your emotional intelligence can help you change the model for success.
His latest book, “Primal Leadership: Realizing the Power of Emotional Intelligence,” unveils new scientific evidence demonstrating a leader’s emotional intelligence has an enormous impact on the performance of groups being led, which affects the organization’s bottom line.
A former reporter on the brain and behavioral sciences for The New York Times, Dr. Goleman is co-chair for the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations at Rutgers University.
His visit to WKU also is supported by the Cultural Enhancement Committee, WKU Enrollment Management, Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Teacher Quality Funds, Department of Psychology, Gordon Ford College of Business and the Endowment for the Wendell Cherry Visiting Professorship, and The Center for Leadership Excellence.
Dr. Goleman earned his undergraduate degree as an Alfred P. Sloan Scholar, magna cum laude, at Amherst and received his master’s and doctorate in clinical psychology and personality development as a Ford Fellow at Harvard.
Born in Stockton, Calif., Dr. Goleman lives in the Berkshires of Massachusetts with his wife. He has two grown children. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
