School's New AD.PR Program Explores
Forces Shaping The Future Of the Advertising
And Public Relations Industry
November 03, 2005
Bowling Green, Ky. - Future trends shaping the advertising and public relations industry will be the topic for an industry-led panel discussion hosted by Western Kentucky University’s newly-merged AD.PR program on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Mass Media and Technology Hall auditorium.
With merger and acquisition being a dominant industry force today, this panel will explore the ramifications of consolidation of services, skills and strategies in the advertising and public relations industry, what consolidation means to clients and customers of those services, and what graduating AD.PR students can expect as they search for jobs in a consolidated workplace.
The panel discussion will feature speakers from across the region all with different but complementary backgrounds in the advertising and public relations industries. Panel members include: Steve Chandler, President, North Star Destination Strategies; Perri duGard Owens, Director of Marketing, HCA America (Tristar Hospitals); Karen Baker, VP Account Supervisor, Atkinson Public Relations; and Steve Keller, Principal Partner, Intransparent Creative Management.
“The consolidation of the advertising and public relations sequences at Western mirrors the growing trend of convergence in the media industry,” said Cliff Shaluta, the new program coordinator for the merged unit. “Clients have come to expect a more integrated approach to product marketing and promotion. By combining the two once-separate sequences, we are now able to cross-educate our students and leverage the synergies of a team approach for campaign strategy and planning. It’s a real win for students, faculty and an industry searching for more qualified first-job candidates.”
The panel discussion caps a visual display in the School’s media gallery titled Fusion: The Show. The display features award-wining work from several of the most prominent consolidated advertising and public relations agencies in Louisville and Nashville including: Bohan (Nashville); The Buntin Group (Nashville); Creative Alliance (Louisville); Doe Anderson (Louisville); New West (Louisville); and Image West - Western Kentucky University’s student-run advertising and public relations firm (the nation’s only student-run consolidated advertising and public relations firm).
“The gallery show and panel discussion is a fitting launch to what’s become the second largest sequence in the School of Journalism and Broadcasting,” said Dr. Pam Johnson, the School’s director. The future success and growth of both the advertising and public relations sequences lay in their ability to provide the industry with exceptionally skilled and proficient entry-level applicants. The merger of the two programs will insure success in that endeavor.”
