WKU Students Honored At Sigma Xi
Awards Banquet

Bowling Green, Ky. - Eighteen undergraduate and graduate students were recognized recently at the 35th annual Western Kentucky University Sigma Xi Research Conference Awards Banquet.

In the undergraduate division, Lewis Watson, a Liberty junior, received the best presentation award for his research titled "Increased synthesis of immuno-regulatory cytokines in toxoplasma gondii-infected mice maintained on an antioxidant diet." Watson's faculty adviser is Dr. Cheryl Davis, biology professor.

In the graduate division, Eric Vukmanic of Paintsville received the best presentation award for his research titled "Suppression of the Zebrafish Retinal Off-pathway Alters the Response of the On-pathway." Vukmanic, whose adviser is psychology professor Dr. Joseph Bilotta, will present his work this month at the international meeting of the Association of Research for Vision and Ophthalmology in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The best presentation winners were selected from first-place recipients in the Sigma Xi student research conference. Other award winners recognized April 20 were:

Undergraduate Biology, Chemistry: first, Watson; second, Ginger King, a Springfield senior, chemistry, "Arsenic partitioning at three USA electric power plants"; third, Jessica Hancock, a Morganfield junior, biology, "Isolation of the human PHKG2 promoter."

Undergraduate Computer Science, English, Folk Studies and Anthropology, History, Psychology, Sociology: first, Timothy Thornberry Jr., a Lawrenceburg junior, psychology, "Development of the zebrafish retina"; second, Lydia Nelson, a sophomore from Carver, Mass., history, "Soap Box Diplomacy: Images of race and nationality in the U.S. and Cuba, 1898-1901"; third, Amy Baird, a Bowling Green senior, psychology, "The effect of idealized magazine advertisements on male body satisfaction."

Undergraduate Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences, Engineering, Geography/Geology, Physics/Astronomy: first, Ashley Williams, a Leitchfield senior, geography and geology, "Paleoclimate Analysis of Northeastern Kentucky, based on Stable Isotopes Carbon and Oxygen, Recorded In Speleothems From Lexington, Kentucky"; second, Tim Morgan, a Lawrenceburg senior, physics and astronomy, "Triangulation of Radioactive Sources via WiFi-based Radiation Detectors"; third, Adam Schultz, a Bee Spring senior, engineering, "Mechanical Torque Measuring Device."

Graduate Economics, Psychology, Public Health, Social Work: first, Vukmanic; second, Elizabeth Wiesemann of Bowling Green, psychology, "Aging and the Perception of Local Surface Orientation"; third, John Jones of Bowling Green, psychology, "Memory for words and non-words in the peripheral view."

Graduate Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography/Geology, Physics/Astronomy: first, Cierra Cross of Bowling Green, chemistry, "Incorporation of solid phase extraction strong cation exchange resins for the determination of atrazine and selected respective metabolites"; second, William Baldwin of Bowling Green, geography and geology, "A Meteorological Comparison of a Cool Season and Warm Season Flood Event in the Southern Appalachians"; third, Nathan Whitely of Bowling Green, chemistry, "Turning Wastes Into Resources: Developing Alternate Disposal Methods For Chicken Litter."

Posters: first, Dasen Kendrick, a Bowling Green graduate student, geography and geology, "The Relationship between Mesometeorological Patterns and Ozone Concentration Variability"; second, Becca Davis, a junior from Lebanon, Tenn., chemistry, "Effects of amine ligand bulk in platinum diamine complexes on the rate of reaction with DNA and protein residues"; third, Ashley Dockery, a Morgantown junior, chemistry, "Occurrence and Distribution of Mercury in Mammoth Cave National Park."
