WKU Graduate Wins Army Health Professions Scholarship

May 12, 2005

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University graduate Anna Jones of Bowling Green has been awarded the Army Health Professions Scholarship to attend optometry school.

Jones, a biology major who graduated Friday night, was one of only four students in the nation to receive a full scholarship. She will attend the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn.

The scholarship award will pay for tuition, equipment, fees (currently about $90,000 for four years) and a stipend of $1,200 per month. The Army Health Professions Scholarship will permit Jones to graduate debt free from optometry school.

Jones also will serve a four-year commitment as a captain in the U.S. Army to provide optometric care to soldiers. Her official swearing-in ceremony was held Friday at WKU's Pearce-Ford Tower.
