Yearbook Honored At Conference

Bowling Green, Ky. - The College Heights Herald returned from the National College Media Convention in New York City with two Silver Crowns while the Talisman received 18 Gold Circle Awards.

The Herald, Western Kentucky University's twice-weekly student newspaper, was one of three student newspapers to receive Silver Crowns from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for both the fall 2003 and spring 2004. The F News at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and the University Daily at Texas Tech also received two Silver Crowns, the second highest honor given by CSPA. Four student newspapers received Gold Crowns for both semesters and three for one semester.

Brandy Warren, a 2004 graduate and reporter at the Anniston (Ala.) Star, was Herald editor both semesters.

Of the Talisman's 18 Gold Circle Awards, seven were for first place, one for second, three for third and seven were Certificates of Merit. The Talisman is Western's yearbook.

Placing first were James Branaman, a May graduate from Seattle, Wash., feature photo; Jay Lively, a May graduate from Oakwood, Ga., sports reporting; Megan Resch, a 2004 graduate from Louisville, caption writing; Tavia Green, a Hopkinsville sophomore, personality profile; J. Michael Moore, senior from Franklin, Tenn., organization or greek writing; Brett Flashnick, a senior from Columbia, S.C., academic photo; staff, student life feature writing.

Chet White, a Louisville senior, placed second in sports action photograph.

Flashnick won thirds in sports action photograph and feature photo and Whitney Ingersoll, a sophomore from Montgomery, Ala., placed third in organization or greek writing.

Certificate of Merit winners were Josh McCoy, a May graduate from Bowling Green, sports action photograph; Ryan Long, a Bowling Green senior, sports action photograph; Nina Greipel, a May graduate from Louisville, academic photo; Bowling Green junior Katie Clark, Louisville graduate Tony Davis and Louisville junior Whitney Saffel, organization or greeks spread; Clark, Louisville junior John Hurley and Moore, sports spread; Clark and Moore, organization or greeks spread; and Bowling Green senior Layne Green, Georgetown junior Clare Lowther and Waverly senior Jennifer Obert, people spread.

Herald staff members won two first-place awards and one second. Columbia senior Justin Fowler won for single page black and white single subject presentation and Elizabethtown graduate student Matt Rountree won for single advertisement. Taking second in single feature photograph was Fielder Williams Strain, a December graduate from Tullahoma, Tenn.

Herald and Talisman adviser and Student Publications director Bob Adams, Student Publications business manager JoAnn Thompson and Talisman assistant adviser Jackie Bretz represented Western at the convention. Adams is chair of the Best of Collegiate Design committee and a member of the College Media Advisers Advisory Board and Bretz presented a yearbook session at the convention.
