June 08, 2005

Bowling Green, Ky. - A Western Kentucky University photojournalism student has won national honors in the Society of Professional Journalists' 2004 Mark of Excellence competition.

Edward Linsmier, a senior from Saxe, Va., was the national winner in the General News Photography category.

The College Heights Herald, WKU's student newspaper, was selected as a national finalist in the Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper (published two-three times per week) category. The national winner was the Argonaut of the University of Idaho. The GW Hatchet of George Washington University also was a national finalist.

National winners and finalists will be recognized Oct. 17 during the Mark of Excellence Luncheon at the SPJ Convention and National Journalism Conference in Las Vegas.

"The winners of the SPJ Mark of Excellence awards represent the best in college journalism and certainly are the result of exceptional work on the part of those chosen for the awards," said Jim Highland, SPJ vice president for campus chapter affairs and coordinator of WKU's print journalism program. "These young people set the agenda of their college campuses, and they clearly demonstrate that college media are in excellent hands."

This year, collegiate journalists submitted more than 3,000 entries in 45 categories. National winners and finalists were selected from the first-place winners from SPJ regional competitions earlier this year.
