Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Andrew Wulff, a Western Kentucky University geology faculty member, and geology major Cody Holbrook have been participating in the 39th Wasatch-Uinta Field Geology Course this summer.

Dr. Wulff is the past director of the six-week field course, which is taught by faculty from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Iowa, University of Illinois, Western Kentucky University and Michigan State University.

The course, based in Park City, Utah, emphasizes various field mapping techniques to develop geologic maps, construct geologic cross sections and address some of the practical applications of these maps.

Students also compose detailed rock descriptions, and measure and construct stratigraphic sections. Projects involve mapping in the Wasatch and Uinta Mountain Ranges, trips to Grand Teton National Park and the San Raphael Swell, as well as daily field trips to other areas of geologic interest.

"The affiliation of WKU with these other, primarily Research I universities, is important in demonstrating the strength of the geology program here, and has opened doors for graduate opportunities and professional collaborations," Dr. Wulff said.

Holbrook of Brentwood, Tenn., received the Department of Geography and Geology's award for Outstanding Geology Major last semester and will be attending New Mexico State University in the fall where he will be studying stratigraphy and sedimentary basin analysis.
