Bowling Green, Ky. - An engineer who attempted to stop the launch of space shuttle Challenger in 1986 will visit Western Kentucky University on Tuesday (Feb. 1).

Roger Boisjoly will discuss the Challenger disaster at 7 p.m. at the Knicely Conference Center auditorium (room 138). His presentation is funded by The William A. and Joyce R. Bell Excellence Fund for Civil Engineering.

Boisjoly will talk about his involvement in discovering the problem with the shuttle's solid rocket booster O-rings, his efforts to stop the launch and the events that followed. His insight into professional ethics and the rights and responsibilities of engineers should be a valuable experience for all.

For his honesty and integrity leading up to and directly following the shuttle disaster, Boisjoly was awarded the Prize for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
