WKU Block And Bridle Club
Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University Block and Bridle Club captured two of the five national awards presented during the 85th National Convention in Denver, Colo., Jan. 13-15.
Whitney LeGrand, a senior agriculture and communications major from Warsaw, placed first in the Outstanding Junior competition among candidates representing the 91 chapters nationwide. This award was based upon Block and Bridle activities, academic achievements, leadership ability and other campus involvement. For the second year in a row, the WKU chapter's scrapbook has placed first in the Chapter Scrapbook Competition. Fran Korthaus, a junior pre-veterinary/animal science student from Prospect, is the Block and Bridle member in charge of preparing both of these scrapbooks. The WKU chapter also placed fifth out of 91 chapters in the Chapter Activities award. This award requires each chapter to submit a detailed description of all yearly activities. Some of the major activities of the WKU Block and Bridle chapter are a catering service provided for community agriculturalists and visitors of the WKU's L. D. Brown Agricultural Exposition Center, various monthly community service activities, hosting guest speakers at meetings, and traveling to conventions and field trips to broaden members' knowledge about agriculture and the animal science industry. Western's Block and Bridle was represented by 27 members and a faculty adviser at the convention. In addition to the awards banquet, members had the opportunity to tour various agriculture facilities in Colorado and participate in leadership development seminars. Students also spent a day at the 99th National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver. Faculty advisers for the club are Dr. Gordon Jones, professor of animal science, and Darrin Benton, manager of the WKU Exposition Center. More WKU news is available at www.wku.edu.
