Bowling Green, Ky. - A former Hilltopper student-athlete is once again giving back to his alma mater in support of the men's basketball program.
Steve Eaton of Atlanta and his wife, Margaret, recently made a gift of $150,000 to Western Kentucky University. Of that gift, $100,000 will support the Men's Basketball Enhancement Fund, and $50,000 will be used to create an endowed scholarship for Hilltopper Basketball.
Tom Hiles, WKU's vice president for Institutional Advancement, said the Eatons' gift will make a huge difference for basketball. "Steve was a Hilltopper Basketball player from 1970 to 1972, with one of the highlights of his career being Western's 1971 Final Four appearance," he said. "His and Margaret's leadership gift will allow the program to continue to attract the best and brightest student athletes."
Hiles said this gift will complement the $75,000 gift for the Basketball Enhancement Fund that the Eatons made in August of 2000, with an additional $50,000 given to the Gordon Ford College of Business.
Hilltopper Head Coach Darrin Horn said Steve and Margaret Eaton "epitomize what makes Western Kentucky University special. Their gift to our program comes from a generous spirit and a commitment to making a difference for others. We are truly grateful for their support and that people with such great class are part of our Western Family."
"Western has a great tradition," Steve Eaton said. "Margaret and I are particularly excited by the dynamic growth and progress of Western over the last few years under the leadership of President Gary Ransdell and we wanted to be part of that. Obviously, our hearts are close to Hilltopper Basketball and Coach Horn, and we believe it is important for the program to have the financial viability necessary to attract quality student athletes. Hilltopper Basketball is one of several areas in which Western demonstrates national prominence."
Eaton is a 1972 alumnus of Western. He is managing director of EDG Partners, LLC in Atlanta.
