Bowling Green, Ky. - A communication professor from Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan, will be at Western Kentucky University this month as a part of the International Journalism and Media Management Training Program.

Dr. Mahmoud Shalabieh will be on campus Aug. 10-27 to collaborate with Dr. Pam Johnson, director of the School of Journalism and Broadcasting, and broadcasting professor Jeanine Cherry in the development of a radio journalism curriculum tailored for Yarmouk University.

In addition, Dr. Shalabieh will participate in a professional residency with the staff of Western's Public Radio to gain hands-on knowledge of WKU's radio journalism and station operations expertise. Providing the support for this residency are: Jack Hanes, director of Educational Telecommunications; Peter Bryant, station manager of Western's Public Radio; Terry Reagan, director of development for Western's Public Broadcasting; and the news staff of Western's Public Radio, Dan Modlin, Kevin Willis, Joe Corcoran, Lisa Autry and Barbara Deeb.

This visit is the precursor to an 18-month focused effort by the International Journalism and Media Management Training Program to assist Yarmouk University in the start-up of a community radio station, similar to the Western Kentucky Public Radio operation.

The project is a collaboration between Western Kentucky's Public Broadcasting and Internews® Network. Internews® is an international non-profit that supports open media worldwide and is responsible for training thousands of journalists in emerging democracies in the past decade. The program is funded through USAID by an appropriation secured by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Sen. McConnell recognized the collaborative possibilities of Western and Internews® and was instrumental in bringing the partners together and in the continuing support for this program. The senator has long been an advocate for strong independent media around the world, a critical component of democracy building.
