Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University Board of Regents today approved several items related to campus transportation and parking, including a $3 million transportation project.

The project will include the purchase of property and construction of a transportation center and the purchase of replacement buses for the transportation program. It is funded by a nearly $2.5 million federal grant with matching funds of more than $300,000 each from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the university.

“This really adds significant upgrades needed by our transportation system,” WKU President Gary Ransdell said.

The transportation center, which will be used to house and maintain the buses, will be located on a nearly three-acre undeveloped lot behind Colonial Manor Nursing Home at 2365 Nashville Road. The board approved buying that property for $60,000. The property is adjacent to the university’s South Campus and the Campbell Lane parking lot.

The board also approved the creation of a department for Parking and Transportation Services. The new department combines the activities of the volunteer Parking and Transportation Committee, parking services provided by WKU Police and transportation/shuttle bus services coordinated by Facilities Management.

In other business, the board:

*Approved awarding an honorary doctorate to sculptor Ed Hamilton, a native of Louisville. His creations include "The Spirit of Freedom," the African-American Civil War Memorial in Washington, D.C.

*Approved faculty emeritus status for nine retired faculty members: Robert Otto, Norman Hunter, Herbert Simmons, Rudolph Prins, Alan Yungbluth, Glen Conner, Joseph Stokes, Camilla Collins and Beverly Veenker.

*Swore in Student Regent Patti Johnson, a senior from Marion.

*Recognized Board Chair Cornelius Martin for his contributions to the University, including funding the Cornelius Martin Regents Room in Mass Media and Technology Hall.
