Western Kentucky University Participating WKU Forensics Team, a public forum debate will be held on Wednesday,Oct. 6, at the Theresa Gerard Auditorium (Room 103) in the Garrett Conference Center at 7 p.m. This debate over American Power and Global Security will focus on the possible means for the United States to deal with foreign dictators. Much like the famed "British Debates" hosted at Western over the years, "The People Speak" debate will be in parliamentary debate form. WKU Debate Coach Doug Mory explains, "Parliamentary Debate is a fascinating forum, given that it provides participants a chance to think on their feet and debate the issues of the day." As the 2004 Presidential election approaches, citizens are shaping the growing discourse on America's leadership in the world. The People Speak series offers an opportunity for Western Kentucky University to get involved in the discussion of these critical issues. Exploring how aspects of these policies affect their lives, communities, and help guide the course of America's role in the world. The People Speak was created in 2003 by the United Nations Foundation and a nonpartisan group of concerned organizations to provide forums for Americans to participate in the discussions of policies affecting their future. Building on the success of last year's series, which culminated in over 2,000 discussions across the U.S., the 2004 initiative will engage universities, religious organizations, community groups, editorial writers, think-tanks, concerned citizens, and others to participate in a public discourse on U.S. foreign policy.
