WKU's Communication Department October 18, 2004 "We kicked off communication month with DebateWatch, which was a great success among all students," said Sally Ray, Communication Department Head. "We have some wonderful speakers this month, so I hope students take advantage of the opportunity to learn from these distinguished communication scholars." Special guest Dr. Kurt Ritter from Texas A&M University is visiting campus to speak about presidential rhetoric. Students can listen to Ritter's speech "Ghosts in the White House: Speechwriting and the Modern Presidency" at 7 p.m. Monday (Oct. 18) at Garrett Conference Center, room 103. During Homecoming's Festival of Friends at 1 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 23), the communication department and WKU Forensics Alumni host special guest Kassie DePaiva at the Downing University Center South Lawn. DePaiva, a former student of forensics director Judy Woodring and an actress on the soap opera "One Life to Live," will be at the tent signing autographs and speaking to students. Dr. Larry Winn presents "Trail of Fears: Decision Making Leading to the War with Iraq" at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 in Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center, room 146. Winn's presentation is sponsored in part by Lambda Pi Eta, Honor Society of the National Communication Association. Communication month closes with a Speakers Corner! series at noon Oct. 25-27 at the Java City fountain. Students can stop by and voice their opinion on issues they deem important and debate with their peers. Speaker's Corner! is sponsored by WKU Communications Ambassadors. Communication month's activities emphasize the theme "Celebrating the Freedom of Expression." The events are designed to engage students and attract undeclared majors to the communication department.
