Gaines Lecture Series

November 17, 2004

Bowling Green, Ky. - The official photographer for President Reagan will be the first speaker in the Gaines Lecture Series at Western Kentucky University.

Pete Souza, who was a member of the White House staff during the Reagan administration and the official photographer for the former president's funeral in June, will speak at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium.

Western's School of Journalism and Broadcasting is launching the lecture series to bring a top journalist to Bowling Green and has named it after the Gaines family in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Daily News. Souza's lecture is free and open to the public.

Souza has had a long career as a photojournalist. He was an official White House photographer from June 1983 until Reagan's last day as president.

In 1992 Souza produced and published "Unguarded Moments: Behind-the-Scenes Photographs of President Reagan," a coffee-table book based on his 5 1/2 years in the White House. A new book, "Images of Greatness: An Intimate Look at the Presidency of Ronald Reagan," was published in June 2004.

Since 1998, Souza has been the national photographer for the Chicago Tribune's Washington bureau. He has covered events in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Northern Ireland, the presidential campaigns of 2000 and 2004 and the Clinton impeachment in 1998.

In 2003, Souza pursued a project across the United States on "Environmental Battlegrounds," culminating in a Special Photo Report that was published as a 12-page, all-color section in the Tribune. The project photographically reported how Bush administration policy is affecting the environment.

Souza also has worked as a freelancer for nine years in Washington (1989-1998). He has photographed two articles on assignment for National Geographic Magazine and three photo essays for Life Magazine. His photographs have also been published in many other magazines and newspapers around the world.

Another documentary book by Souza, "Plebe Summer at the U.S. Naval Academy," chronicles one company of incoming midshipmen through the six-week indoctrination period.

Souza has won numerous photojournalism awards including several in the prestigious Pictures of the Year annual competition and the White House News Photographers Association's yearly contest.

He has lectured at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Harvard University, Boston University, the University of Kansas, Western Kentucky University and Kansas State University. He also has appeared on national television news programs.

Souza's photographs have been on exhibit at the National Archives, Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Newseum, Boston University, Kansas State University, the 92nd Street Y in New York City, the U.S. Naval Academy, the Navy Museum, and the National Press Club in Washington.

A native of South Dartmouth, Mass., Souza graduated with a bachelor of science degree in public communications from Boston University and attended graduate school at Kansas State University. To view some of Souza's work, visit his website at http://www.petesouza.com.
