WKU Students, Faculty Attend
Science Conference

Bowling Green, Ky. - Thirteen Western Kentucky University students, more than any other Kentucky college or university, won awards for their research presentations at the 90th annual Kentucky Academy of Science meeting.

Seven Western students received first-place awards as WKU students and faculty made 74 presentations at meeting Nov. 4-6 in Murray.

Kate Hertweck, a biology major from Evansville, Ind., won first place in zoology for her presentation "The importance of mating order on fertilization success in male Ambystoma talpoideum (mole salamanders)."

Brittany Sutherland, a biology major from Lawrenceburg, tied for first place in botany and microbiology for her talk "Evidence for a hybrid origin of Rubus ursinus (Rosaceae) based on low-copy nuclear genes."

T. Michael Dodson, a recombinant genetics major from Westmoreland, Tenn., tied for first place in botany and microbiology for his presentation titled "Relationships and classification of Rubus (Rosaceae) based on chloroplast DNA sequences."

Steven Isaacs, a biochemistry major from Bowling Green, was awarded first prize in chemistry for his talk "Chemical and thermal stability of nanoparticles and nanoparticle multilayered films."

Jeremy Tallent, a geology major from Bowling Green, received first place for his presentation "Increasing the accuracy of subsurface cartographic methods using GIS, providing better correlation between surface and sub-surface locales."

Jessica Phillips, a geography major from Columbia, Tenn., won for her presentation "An analysis of May 2, 2002 severe flash flooding of Buchanan County, Virginia."

Amy Baird, a psychology major from Bowling Green, won first place for her poster "Magazine advertisements as an antecedent to male body dissatisfaction."

Other WKU award winners included the following:

Amanda Morris, a biology major from Owensboro, second in physiology and biochemistry.

Sondra Massey, a recombinant genetics major from Bowling Green, third in chemistry.

Erin Cutler, a chemistry major from Bowling Green, second in Perkin-Elmer Chemistry Award.

Brady D. Garabato, a biochemistry major form Bowling Green, third in Perkin-Elmer Chemistry Award.

Daniel Thomas, a geography major from Bowling Green, tied for second in geography.

Ronson Elrod, a geography major from Russellville, tied for second in geography.
