WKU Department Head Lectures
At U.S. Military Academy

November 09, 2004

Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. David Keeling, head of Western Kentucky University's Department of Geography and Geology, was invited to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point last week to give a lecture to cadets enrolled in the geography, environmental sciences and environmental engineering programs.

This is Dr. Keeling's second visit to West Point as a visiting lecturer. The invitation to West Point was extended by Lt. Col. Kenneth McDonald, a May 1995 graduate of WKU's geoscience master's program.

Originally from Wyoming, Lt. Col. McDonald went on to earn a doctorate in geological engineering from the Missouri School of Mines, served tours of duty with the military in Kosovo and Korea, and has returned to West Point as an assistant professor in the environmental sciences program.

Dr. Keeling lectured on "Environmental Challenges to Latin America in the 21st Century" and discussed the Doctrine of Preemptive Resolution with about 150 cadets.

The lecture at West Point was part of the Department of Geography and Geology's Leadership in Geoscience program, designed to link Western's geoscience students and faculty with institutions and research partners around the country and across the globe.
