WKU Recognizes Honor Graduates,
Others At Commencement

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University recognized several outstanding students and faculty members May 8 at its 155th Commencement.

Honor graduates

The University recognized 22 honor graduates. The winners of the Ogden Trustees' Award had a 4.0 grade-point average with all coursework completed at Western. Scholars of the College had the highest GPAs in their colleges while completing at least 64 credit hours at Western.

Caleb Benningfield, a chemistry major from Bowling Green, was named scholar of the Ogden College of Science and Engineering and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. He is the son of Randy and Jane Benningfield.

Steven R. Frame, a biology major from Morgantown, was named scholar of the Ogden College of Science and Engineering and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. He is the son of Deloris and Steven Jackson and Michael Frame.

Elisha Roberson, a recombinant genetics major from Dawson Springs, was named scholar of the Ogden College of Science and Engineering and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. He is the son of Steve and Rhonda Roberson.

Rosarae Tieken, an industrial sciences major from Wadesville, Ind., was named scholar of the Ogden College of Science and Engineering. She is the daughter of Dennis and Susie Tieken.

Nathan Whitely, a chemistry major from Beaver Dam, was named scholar of the Ogden College of Science and Engineering and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. He is the son of Karen and Robert Whitely.

Teresa Bertrand, a nursing major from Glasgow, was named scholar of the College of Health and Human Services and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. She is the daughter of Ann Bertrand and Robert and Gloria Bertrand.

Erin Chelf, a hospitality management and dietetics major from Lebanon, was named scholar of the College of Health and Human Services. She is the daughter of Frank and Margaret Chelf.

Rosa Feeback, an elementary education major from Carlisle, was named scholar of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. She is the daughter of Harry and Sharon Feeback.

Carrie Holman, an elementary education major from Russellville, was named scholar of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. She is the daughter of Gary and Kathy Holman.

Jessica Jolly, an psychology and communications studies major from Bowling Green, was named scholar of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. She is the daughter of Joe and Reta Jolly.

Ashley Symons, an elementary education major from Glasgow, was named scholar of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. She is the daughter of Barry and Donna Symons.

Jenny Cecil, an accounting major from Glendale, was named scholar of the Gordon Ford College of Business. She is the daughter of Frankie and Linda Cecil.

Sarah Jones, an accounting major from Lafayette, Tenn., was named scholar of the Gordon Ford College of Business. She is the wife of Bart Jones and daughter of Johnny and Sherree Eubank.

Jennifer Rakestraw, a computer information systems major from Slaughters, was named scholar of the Gordon Ford College of Business. She is the daughter of Marsha and Powell Rakestraw Jr.

Anna Stoyadinova, an accounting major from Pernik, Bulgaria, was named scholar of the Gordon Ford College of Business and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. She is the daughter of Tsevetanka Hadjieva.

Kortney Wonderlich, an accounting major from Shelbyville, was named scholar of the Gordon Ford College of Business and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. She is the daughter of Roger and Jan Wonderlich.

Amber Beisel, a history major from Louisville, was named scholar of the Potter College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She is the daughter of Carry Beisel and the late Jamie Beisel.

Abby Brannick, a corporate and organizational communication major from Louisville, was named scholar of the Potter College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. She is the daughter of James Brannick and Kim Hemmer.

Brandon Jones, a corporate and organizational communication major from Smiths Grove, was named scholar of the Potter College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. He is the son of Dennis and Pamela Jones.

Meridith Martin, an advertising major from Bethpage, Tenn., was named scholar of the Potter College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and received the Ogden Trustees' Award. She is the wife of David Doran and daughter of Robert and Gail Jenkins and Ronald Martin.

Stephanie Vincent, a political science and sociology major from Bowling Green, was named scholar of the Potter College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She is the daughter of Butch and Cindy Vincent.

Melanie Bailey West, an English and allied language arts major from Jamestown, was named scholar of the Potter College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She is the wife of William West and daughter of David and Diane Bailey.

Distinguished University Professors

Dr. Michael Seidler and Dr. Joseph Trafton, both members of the Department of Philosophy and Religion, were recognized as Distinguished University Professors.

Dr. Seidler, who joined the WKU faculty in 1986, has developed a national and international reputation for research and teaching. His research topics include the work of Samuel von Pufendorf, one of the most important philosophers and thinkers of the modern age.

Dr. Trafton, has been at WKU since 1977, remains an outstanding and popular teacher in biblical studies with specialties in New Testament and Second Temple Judaism. He also is among a select group of scholars doing original research on the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Faculty awards

Provost Barbara Burch recognized the following faculty award winners, who'll be formally honored at the fall faculty convocation: Dr. Doug Harper, physics and astronomy, excellence in teaching; Dr. Matt Green, physical education and recreation, excellence in research/creativity; Linda Todd, business and computer studies at Bowling Green Community College, excellence in public service; Jo-Anne Ryan, journalism and broadcasting, excellence in student advising.

U.S. Army commissioning

Twelve members of the Hilltopper Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program were commissioned as second lieutenants. They are: Rafael Antione, Larry S. Blankenship, Crystal M. Edsell and Michael A. Steidl, all of Bowling Green;

Justin D. Barnes of Fort Irwin, Calif.; Steven C. Barnes of Alvaton; Steven P. Dukes of Central City; John F. Moore and Ashton R. Shoults, both of Elizabethtown; Andrew J. Saunders of Evansville, Ind; Jamie L. Southerland of Morgantown; and Sibaria F. Taylor of Owensboro.

Retiring faculty

Dr. Burch also recognized the following faculty members who are retiring or taking optional retirement: Dr. Jackson Kesler, theatre and dance; Dr. Jerry Wilder, counseling and student affairs; Dr. Martha Jenkins, consumer and family sciences; Dr. Stan Cooke, communication disorders.

Other recognitions

WKU President Gary Ransdell remembered Rachel Blevins, Katie Jeter and Rachel Cate, three members of Phi Mu sorority who died in a February auto accident.

Dr. Ransdell also recognized senior Brooke Hall who is battling cancer. Hall returned to her Bowling Green home Friday, but Dr. Ransdell made a special commencement presentation to her Wednesday at Norton Hospital in Louisville.
